William Ross was a merchant from Cullen, Banffshire, who spent much of his lifetime in Hong Kong. When he returned home, he was a wealthy man and became Provost of Cullen, where he died in 1867 at 49 years of age. Because of his association with China and Hong Kong, he was known as "Auld Cathay". Also, I have been told that the name Ross was never spoken in Cullen fishing circles because it was taboo and nicknames had to be used. Do you know the reason why?

My father, William Ross, was born in Aberdeen in 1876 in Aberdeen, and migrated to Western Australia in 1913. His ancesters had been seafarers, boatbuilders and fishermen from Cullen. Seek more info about his ancestry.
