William Ross, son of the fur trader and explorer Alexander Ross, became the first postmaster in the Northwest on March 1, 1855. Ross House, begun in 1852 and completed in 1854, is the original Red River frame structure which served as post office and home of the Ross family of Winnipeg. Unfortunately, William died in May of 1856.
