FRIDAY

The weather forecast stated: "Fog, showers and a possible late thunderstorm". After checking the McGregor/Ross mausoleum at the Waterdown pioneer cemetery before noon, we found that the fish-and-chip restaurant owners were away on holidays, so the logical decision was a drive straight on to Fergus. The Guelph Line Road proved to have a detour once again, but the traffic was light. During lunch at the "Brew House On The Grand" in Fergus we learned that several musicians from the tattoo were going to hold a ceilidh there at 2:30 pm. Patricia took the following four photos to record the experience. The group included Tommy Leadbeater - - - one of Cape Breton's finest vocalists.

Heading towards the fairgrounds afterwards, Patricia remembered that her umbrella had been left back at the pub. It started to rain again. A 5:00 pm snack at the Brew House was in order. Due to the threat of a storm, we decided to stay at the Maple Crest Farm B&B instead of attending the evening Tattoo at the Fergus Scottish Festival.

SATURDAY

The 2011 map is included here. The McKiddie's Centre was moved from the "Tea Garden" spot at Gate 3 to the area near the Kinsmen Breakfast at Gate 2 (and obscured by a Shuttle Court).

A young lad who was serving as a volunteer at the McKiddie's Centre showed up later in the afternoon with a Clan Passport Booklet. I assumed that he had received it from the McKiddie's Centre where I had left a box containing 150 booklets. I was shocked to learn that he had picked up a booklet at the Campbell tent on the Avenue of The Clans. In other words, the McKiddie's Centre are still completely disassociated from any effort to encourage children to learn about their Scottish roots. What a shame!

AVENUE OF THE CLANS

In spite of the rain, the limited success of the Clan Passport Booklets was due to some help from clan representatives who volunteered during our visit to the Highlands of Durham Scottish Festival in Uxbridge. Many thanks!

The success of the Clan Passport booklets in 2010 had been partly due to the location of the McKiddies Centre at the Avenue of the Clans, but it appears that this will no longer be the case. All credit for the fun of youngsters having a "treasure hunt" for clan badge stamps belongs with the clans who are presented here.

NOTE: The photos of the Clan Ross tent were taken by Past-President Andy Ross Thibodeau - - - and labelled with an "ART" in the bottom right corner.
